Short Bio
Philip Frohnmayer won top prize in the 1976 Munich International Competition and began his European career singing leading roles in Mozart and Verdi operas in Germany, Luxembourg, and Holland. He created the role of Frère Léon in the Dutch Radio premiere recording of Olivier Messiaen’s St. François d’Assise, with performances in Madrid, Bonn, and Utrecht. He has presented recital tours in the Republic of Georgia, France, and Latin America and given recital, concert, and operatic appearances throughout the U.S. A regular soloist with the Louisiana Philharmonic, he has performed Brahms’ Requiem, Mendelssohn’s Erste Walpurgis and Carmina Burana and Odyssey of Faith in past seasons. In opera and oratorio, he has collaborated with conductors Kubelik, Shaw, Comissiona, Abravanel, Montgomery, Rilling, Entremont, Nagano, and Klauspeter Seibel. With New Orleans Opera he has sung roles in Carmen, Salome, Amahl and the Night Visitors, Andrea Chenier, and Turandot. In November 2001 he sang the role of Dr. Bartolo in Barber of Seville with Mississippi Opera. He has performed and recorded with major radio orchestras in Holland and Germany. His CD recordings appear on the CBS, Allegro, Albany and Centaur labels. Mr. Frohnmayer is a graduate of Harvard University, University of Oregon, and the Stuttgart Hochschule für Musik. His teachers included Hans Hotter, Ré Koster, and the French baritone Martial Singher.
Professor Frohnmayer joined the faculty of Loyola University in New Orleans in the fall of 1982. Prior to his years singing professionally in Europe, he served on the voice faculties of Humboldt State University in Arcata, California, and University of Utah in Salt Lake City where he was Chair of the Voice Faculty.
In 1996 Philip Frohnmayer was given the Dux Academicus Award by the President’s Council of Loyola University for his excellence in teaching, research and community service. He is the Mary Freeman Wisdom Distiguished Professor of Opera and chair of vocal studies at Loyola University. He currently has students on the rosters of the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera and the San Francisco Opera as well as several companies abroad. Many of them can also be found singing leading roles at summer festivals—Aspen, Brevard, Ohio Light Opera, Central City and Chautauqua for example. Among the graduate programs his students have completed are those at Indiana University, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, the Manhattan School, the Juilliard School, the Curtis Insititute, Eastman School of Music, Yale University and the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia. Among his most sought after students and former students are Alfred Walker, bass baritone; Sarah Jane MacMahon, soprano; Bryan Hymel, tenor, and of course his daughter, Anne Marie Frohnmayer.
Mr. Frohnmayer regularly presents masterclasses and lectures on a variety of musical subjects. For the summers of 1998 and 1999 he joined the voice and opera faculty of the Aspen Music Festival and School. He has been a judge and clinician for the last several years at the Schmidt Awards in Indianapolis. He has adjudicated Metropolitan Opera Auditions in Northern Mississippi and in Los Angeles. He is currently at work on a book on singing as a lifetime discipline.
