Loyola University New Orleans - Loyola Faculty Jazz Ensemble

Jazz Studies

What more natural place to study jazz than its birthplace?

Maybe you’ve dreamed of New Orleans since you first started playing . . . to walk in the footsteps of jazz legends like Louis Armstrong and the Marsalis family . . .to soak in the intense sounds, flavors and inspirations that abound here. Just as New Orleans is the birthplace of jazz, Loyola is the birthplace of a unique degree program. We were the first to offer the bachelor of music in jazz studies degree in this jazz-rich city. And that means you’ll have opportunities here unlike you’ll find anywhere else.

Where else can you jam with internationally renowned jazz artists?

Sure, you’ll study the development of jazz and participate in its continued growth, while still focusing on traditional musical and rigorous academic studies. You’ll be taught by professionals who are not just academics, but who continue to be active in the jazz and commercial fields. You’ll also get personal exposure to legendary musicians like Ellis Marsalis, Nicholas Payton, Terence Blanchard, and Michel Camilo through our year-round workshops and during the annual Loyola University Jazz Ensemble Festival’s masterclasses. Musicians like Brian Blade, Stefan Harris, and Mark Whitfield drop by to perform through the College of Music and Fine Arts’ Montage Performance Series. And you can take your own share of the accolades by joining the award-winning Loyola Jazz Band.

The Loyola University College of Music and Fine Arts is also the home of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance, one of the most competitive jazz graduate programs in the world.
