Loyola Songwriting Contest Rules

Hey, Loyola. We know that across all of our colleges and majors, we have a huge body of talented musicians, poets, programmers, producers, composers, and songwriters, so we figured we'd turn to you for some help.

We need some new songs, and we want you to write them. We're looking for two types:

First, a fight song or a school spirit song to be used mainly at athletic events. We have our fight song, and we love it and all the tradition that comes with it. We're not looking to replace it; we want something fun to stand alongside it and help get our Wolf Pack pumped up.

Second, a song about Loyola in general. We kind of just want to see what you've got. Any genre, any style, from singer/songwriter to rapper with a DJ, from brass band to a cappella group -- any personal expression that captures the place, the experience, or the values of Loyola

All current undergrad students, any college or major, are eligible to submit a recording of a song. But whatever you write, please keep it PG! Remember, this is for sporting events and University celebrations and announcements and will be shared online!

For each category there is a first and second prize winner.

  • 1st prize:  $500 and 20 hours of studio time with an engineer
  • 2nd prize:  $250 and 12 hours of studio time with an engineer

  • Possible Loyola Judges: Jim McCormick, Jay Weigel, Kate Duncan, Rich Collins, David Torkanowsky, Lovell Cooper, John Rankin, Lo Faber, Quiana Lytell, Brett Simpson
  • Possible Celebrity Judges: Gerald Gillum (G-Eazy), Gnash, The Givers, Joe Boston, PJ Morton
  • Possible Industry Judges: Mike Sammis, Kevin Lyman, Alan Ett
  • Possible Alumni Judges: Jason Root, Alex Grant, Jenn Christianson, Reid Martin, Matt Bauerschmidt, Mike Twillman

We will produce a live show on March 18, 2018 in Rousell Hall at 7 p.m., at which time the four nominees in each category will be offered the opportunity to preform their Loyola song submissions in front of a live audience and a panel of judges. The show will be webcast live, and prizes will be awarded at its conclusion!

Entrants will, of course, retain all rights their songs and recordings.  We trust that they will allow the University the gratis use of the winning songs in any way related to the educational, nonprofit work and efforts of the University.
