Short Bio

Dr. Valerie Goertzen has many years of experience teaching courses in music history and research; she taught at Wesleyan University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Kenyon College, Earlham College, and The University of Southern Mississippi before coming to Loyola in 2003.  She is the recipient of numerous awards and grants, including a Fulbright Fellowship and the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst Study Grant.  Dr. Goertzen’s publications include articles and essays on improvisation in the nineteenth century and on eighteenth-century women composers as well as editions of music of Clara Schumann.  She is completing an edition of Brahms’s arrangements for piano, four hands, and two pianos of works of other composers for the Johannes Brahms Gesamtausgabe.  Dr. Goertzen is the representative from the American Musicological Society, Southern Chapter, to the national AMS Council and serves on the AMS Committee for Career-Related Issues.  She is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Brahms Society and is assistant editor of the society’s Newsletter.
