Short Bio

New Orleans artist Carol Leake is known for her landscapes in oil, her figurative watercolors, and her depictions of the festival Mardi Gras which so particularly defines New Orleans. The Carnival images are the subject of a PBS documentary short, Parade Pictures, featuring the Mardi Gras related work of Leake, and of noted artist George Dureau. She has been a member of the visual arts faculty since 1982, teaching painting and drawing and serving as department chair from 1999 to 2003. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she has also coordinated Loyola's art galleries, including the Loyola Gallery Downtown, which first opened in Place St. Charles in 1991, and moved to Julia Street where it provided exhibition opportunities for individual local and regional artists, as well as for shows of a more educational, non-profit nature. She coordinated programming for Loyola's newest exhibition facility, the Collins C. Diboll Gallery, located in the new Monroe Library, from 1999 to 2003.

Carol Leake's work has been shown extensively, both regionally and nationally. She is represented in numerous private and corporate collections, including The Bell South Corporate Headquarters in Atlanta, Freeport MacMoran, Texaco, and the Louisiana Land & Exploration Company. Among the private collections that include her work are the estate of the late Jim Morrison and the collections of artist Peter Halley, writers Valerie Martin, writer Julie Smith, musician Alex Chilton, musician Patti Smith and musician Chris Smither. She is currently represented by Art South, Inc. in Philadelphia.

She was included in the Saltline Biennial 2003 at the Mobile Museum of Art and has had one person exhibitions at Gallery Rx in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and at Mario Villa Gallery in New Orleans.
