Short Bio

John Mahoney is a Professor and Coordinator of Jazz Studies in the College of Music of Loyola University in New Orleans.  He directs the Loyola University Jazz Band, which won the Dr. M.E. “Gene” Hall Award for the most outstanding collegiate big band at the 2007 North Texas Jazz Festival at Addison.  A native of northern New York, he received his B.S. in Music Education from the State University of New York at Potsdam.  In 1978, after playing professionally for six years, he earned his M.M. degree in Jazz and Contemporary Media from the Eastman School of Music, and began teaching at Loyola. In addition to teaching, he remains an active performer on both trombone and piano. He appears as pianist and contributed both a composition and an arrangement on a Louisiana Red Hot Records CD entitled Jazznocracy with the Al Belletto Big Jazz Band.  He is the trombonist on Matt Lemmler’s Portrait of Wonder recording.  A CD of ten of Mahoney’s big band compositions has been released on the New Orleans Music Group label entitled In From Somewhere, and features eighteen outstanding musicians from the New Orleans area.  This big band performs monthly at Snug Harbor and has appeared at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival on several occasions.  Mr. Mahoney has fifteen compositions for jazz ensemble published with Walrus Music Publishing, and has been commissioned by the Airmen of Note, Mandeville High School, the University of Southern Mississippi and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra.  A member of MENC and Past President of the Louisiana unit of IAJE, Mr. Mahoney has adjudicated at the Jackson State University, McNeese State University and Florida International University jazz festivals, conducted the 2003 Alabama All State Jazz Band, and appeared as guest trombonist and composer with the UNO Jazz Orchestra on their Sandbar Series in 2004 and with the University of Southern Mississippi Jazz Band in 2006.  He also directs the annual Loyola University Jazz Ensemble Festival and Loyola Summer Jazz Band Camp.
