Benjamin Benus

Benjamin Benus specializes in the history of twentieth-century art and design, with a focus on Central Europe in the years between the world wars. His research examines connections between avant-garde art, scientific illustration, and data visualization during this period. His publications include “Figurative Constructivism and Sociological Graphics,” in Isotype: Design and Contexts (Hyphen Press, 2013); “The Vienna Method in Amsterdam: Peter Alma’s Office for Pictorial Statistics,” co-authored with Wim Jansen in Design Issues (MIT Press, 2016); and “Otto Neurath’s Social History of Art,” in Creative Collaboration in Art, Practice, Research and Pedagogy (Cambridge Scholars Press, 2018). His current project, “Making Maps Modern,” explores modern artists’ contributions to the design of geographic atlases in the mid-twentieth century.
