Extraordinary Professor of Visual Arts
Barbara Brainard received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Newcomb College, followed by a Master’s in Fine Arts from Tulane University. She also did undergraduate work at Rice University and Marymount Manhattan. She has exhibited her drawings, paintings and mixed media artwork locally, New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, internationally and she enjoys a long standing and on going national reputation.
She was awarded two Pollock/Krasner Foundation grants (2005, 2007), and a Louisiana Division of the Arts Fellowship as well as grants from Louisiana Cultural Economy Foundation. Her work has been published in New American Paintings, Louisiana Literature and The New Orleans Review. Her monotypes are archived at the Drawing Center Viewing Program (NYC), the Los Angeles Printmaking Society Members’ Exhibition and ARTNOW at the Contemporary Arts Center (NO). Her work is in the collection of the New Orleans Museum of Art, Rutgers University, Springfield Museum, Austin Peay State, Bloomsburg University and numerous private collections.
She is represented by Cole Pratt Gallery in New Orleans.
Brainard has been on the Visual Arts faculty since 1989 and presently directs the Drawing Area in the Department of Art and Design. She has also taught Expressive Arts Therapy in the School of Music and Freshman Seminar.
